My chosen career path was graphic design, design for print and web design.
I was born in Hayle and raised in Cornwall. During the 1970s and 80s, I grew up with Star Wars and the birth of computer graphics and the digital age. I am still in awe of all of it now. I loved Vinyl. I was inspired by the incredible diversity of printed designs on 33 LP and 45 single covers; and large format movie posters. Going on that odd trip on the early train from Camborne to London with my Aunt to see theatre shows like Cats. This was my introduction to the commercial art and graphic design world. As a child, I remember seeing colour and fonts everywhere.
I wanted to work in the Arts, and by chance, I learnt about graphic design at school because one of my art teachers was a graphic designer earlier in his career. Not much was talked about design at school back then, especially in Cornwall. But I soon learnt there were many areas to specialise in, especially at art college, which was a revelation. It’s a pity that’s changed over the years, now everything has to be done on your laptop. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of printing and developing your own black and white film and the smell of fixative on your fingers for the rest of the day.
I have had a computer in my house since the early 1990s. It became a necessary tool for work. These days, it is everywhere you look, from your hand to your lap. The design arena hasn’t changed, though. If anything, the online space has become massive with the diversity of artists and designers.
When I’m not working professionally, my passions are family, typography, reading, history, photography, culture, cats, gardening, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, live music, vinyl music, films & documentaries (especially biographies), writing and painting with acrylic art.
I am constantly interested in the Arts. I love working with artists and galleries.
